Leopards without fences
Around the Jawai dam in Pali, a landscape of 10-million-year-old granite kopjes rises from the plains. In their caves and crevices lives one of India's densest leopard populations — yet here there is no park boundary, no fence. Leopards and Rabari pastoralists have shared this land in remarkable peace for generations.
Open year-round, Jawai is as much a cultural journey as a wildlife one — crocodile-filled waters, flamingo wetlands and temple shrines woven through the hills, all explored from some of the finest luxury camps in the country.
Because Jawai sits outside the government permit system that governs India's tiger reserves, safaris here are booked directly through camps and local operators rather than months in advance — a rare freedom that makes it an easy add-on to a Rajasthan itinerary already built around Ranthambore.
